Following the Living Flame: Days, Sites and the Story they Tell
Florence · Assisi · Rome · Naples
Day 1 · Saturday 6 May — Florence
• Set Your Heart on Pilgrimage. We set out toward the flame.
• Fly from the UK to Pisa early in the morning, then travel by coach to Florence, approximately 1½ hours away. The afternoon is at leisure, with Mass in the evening. Overnight in Florence.
Day 2 · Sunday 7 May — Florence
• On the Shoulders of Saints. The forebears consumed by the fire.
• Begin with Santa Maria del Carmine – St Andrew Corsini and the Brancacci Chapel. Visit the shrine of St Mary Magdalen de' Pazzi, followed by Sunday Mass. Overnight in Florence.
Day 3 · Monday 8 May — Florence
• Unhurried Among the Saints. The beauty of Florence, without rushing.
• Explore the Carmelite heritage of Florence, including St Teresa Margaret of the Sacred Heart. Visit San Marco and the Fra Angelico frescoes, with time to enjoy the city at an unhurried pace. Overnight in Florence.
Day 4 · Tuesday 9 May — Florence · Assisi · Rome
• Where the Fire Was Kindled. Our Franciscan roots — Clare, Francis; the wound of love.
• Travel from Florence towards Rome, making a full-day pilgrimage stop in Assisi. Visit the Basilica and tomb of St Francis, pause for lunch, then encounter St Clare and the San Damiano Cross. Continue south, passing the Portiuncula, before arriving in Rome by evening. Overnight in Rome.
Day 5 · Wednesday 10 May — Rome
• Blessed at the Heart of the Church. Under the Holy Father's blessing — then rest.
• Begin the day with a hoped-for Papal Audience in St Peter's Square. The afternoon is free for rest, prayer and personal time. Overnight in Rome.
Day 6 · Thursday 11 May — Rome
• Wounded by Love. The two women Doctors; Rome's great basilicas.
• Follow the story of the two women Doctors of the Church. Visit Santa Maria della Vittoria to encounter Bernini's Ecstasy of St Teresa, and the tomb of St Catherine of Siena at Santa Maria sopra Minerva. Continue to the great basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore and St John Lateran. Overnight in Rome.
Day 7 · Friday 12 May — Rome
• "This Man Is a Saint." Gratión, the exile Rome came home.
• Visit San Martino ai Monti and the early house-church beneath it. Continue to the Discalced Carmelite Generalate for a meeting with the Father General. Overnight in Rome.
Day 8 · Saturday 13 May — Rome · Naples
• Built on the Apostles. The tombs of Peter and Paul; the Church of the martyrs.
• Begin at St Peter's, including the tomb of Peter, canonised in 1622. Travel south to the Catacombs of St Callixtus and then to St Paul Outside the Walls. Continue by coach to Naples. Overnight in Naples.
Day 9 · Sunday 14 May — Naples
• "Nothing but Yourself, Lord". Wisdom bowed to love, the healer of the poor.
• Discover the holy heart of Naples. Visit the Duomo and the shrine of San Gennaro, San Domenico Maggiore and the memory of St Thomas Aquinas, and Gesù Nuovo, associated with St Giuseppe Moscati. Celebrate Sunday Mass. Overnight in Naples.
Day 10 · Monday 15 May — Naples · Pompeii
• Under Our Lady's Mantle. All we carry, entrusted to the Mother; a night of thanksgiving.
• Travel to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary at Pompeii. There will be an opportunity to explore the ruins, and weather permitting, enjoy views towards Vesuvius. In the evening, gather for a festal thanksgiving farewell dinner. Overnight in Naples.
Day 11 · Tuesday 16 May — Naples · Home
• Carry the Fire Home. In her keeping, sent out still burning.
• Conclude the pilgrimage with a final Mass at La Bruna, the Carmine Maggiore, before departing Naples for the journey home.
