The Greek Catholic Annunciation Society, in the old city of Jerusalem, was founded in 1950 in order to provide medical and social support to Palestinian refugees displaced in 1948. In 2003 a new vision was established in order to focus on the needs of women and children from the Christian community in East Jerusalem.
In 2009 the Kindergarten was created to provide day care, food and medical assistance to infants and children, from 3 months to 4 years, of working mothers in the old city.
Through this work the Infant Welfare Centre supports about 60 families, approximately 10% of the local Christian population of the old ciity, who would otherwise find it difficult to live and find work in the old city of Jerusalem. In addition to day care the centre provides additional tuition and support to school age children, financial and social support to mothers, many of whom marry early, and assistance with issues such as drug addiction and domestic violence.
